Organizational Health Assessment

This assessment is designed to help churches and nonprofit organizations prayerfully evaluate the health of their leadership, systems, culture, and ministry practices. Healthy organizations steward people well, operate with wisdom and integrity, and reflect the character of Christ in both mission and method.

Overview

This assessment evaluates four major areas:

  1. Organizational Health
  2. Structure & Governance
  3. Burnout & Sustainability
  4. Trauma-Informed Ministry & Leadership

Scale

For each statement, rate your organization on the following scale:

  • 1 = Strongly Disagree
  • 2 = Disagree
  • 3 = Neutral / Inconsistent
  • 4 = Agree
  • 5 = Strongly Agree

SECTION 1: ORGANIZATIONAL HEALTH

Vision & Mission Alignment

“Let all things be done decently and in order.” — 1 Corinthians 14:40

1. Our organization has a clear and compelling mission.
2. Staff and volunteers understand the mission and can articulate it.
3. Our organization has a strategic plan that aligns with our mission and values.
4. We regularly evaluate whether programs are advancing our mission.
5. Our ministry culture reflects Biblical principles.
6. Communication between leadership and staff is healthy and transparent.
7. People feel safe bringing concerns or feedback.
8. Staff members feel heard and valued.
9. Leadership communicates changes clearly and consistently.
10. Team members believe leadership acts with integrity.

SECTION 2: STRUCTURE & GOVERNANCE

Structure & Governance

“The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance.” — Proverbs 21:5

1. Our board understands its role and responsibilities.
2. Governance structures are clearly defined.
3. Financial oversight is strong and transparent.
4. Leaders are held accountable spiritually and ethically.
5. There are safeguards against misuse of authority.
6. Decision-making authority is clearly understood.
7. Policies are documented and accessible.
8. Board meetings are effective and mission-focused.
9. Leadership succession is discussed proactively.
10. We regularly evaluate organizational effectiveness.

SECTION 3: BURNOUT & SUSTAINABILITY

Burnout & Sustainability

“Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” — Mark 6:31

1. Staff workloads are realistic and sustainable.
2. Ministry expectations are clearly communicated.
3. Leaders are encouraged to take Sabbath and rest regularly.
4. Vacations and time off are honored.
5. Chronic overwork is addressed rather than celebrated.
6. Staff members and volunteers have healthy boundaries.
7. We regularly assess team capacity before adding initiatives.
8. Volunteers are not pressured through guilt.
9. When individuals leave the organization they have shown personal and spiritual growth.
10. Leadership structure supports the growth of team members.

SECTION 4: TRAUMA-INFORMED MINISTRY & LEADERSHIP

Trauma-Informed Ministry & Leadership

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” — Psalm 147:3

1. People generally feel emotionally safe within our organization.
2. Confidentiality is handled responsibly.
3. Policies exist for responding to abuse allegations or misconduct.
4. Leaders avoid manipulative or fear-based communication.
5. We recognize the impact of trauma on behavior and relationships.
6. Staff and volunteers receive training on providing compassion and empathy.
7. We prioritize safety for children and vulnerable adults.
8. We understand how to work through life crises on a variety of levels.
9. We understand how to de-escalate situations in a way that is compassionate and caring.
10. People are treated with love and kindness even during disagreement.

FINAL ENCOURAGEMENT

Healthy ministry is cultivated through abiding in Christ, stewarding people wisely, practicing humility, and creating cultures where truth, grace, accountability, and compassion flourish together.
